The US carrier was conducting training exercises at base off Korean shore.
Two Russian fighter jets flew within 1 nautical mile of USS Ronald Reagan. One of the ships tried to hail the Russians via radio but got no response.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the USS Ronald Reagan -- a massive, nuclear-powered supercarrier -- was involved in a military exercise with South Korean partners when two Russian Tu-142 Bear aircraft flew past the ship.
"These Russian aircraft were intercepted first by Korean military aircraft that were operating in the region," Earnest said. Four American F/A-18s were then mobilized.

The Russians are notorious about pushing the envelope to see how we'll react.

Not really news.... This has been going on since the Reagan years when I was on the flight deck of the USS Ranger. Its part of the game militaries play with each other and happens so often as to be almost insignificant as it relates to being "a story".

I wonder if the Pointed Headed Libs are happy they have that Moron in the White House during times like this that he created.

Putin isn't testing the U.S. Navy. He's testing our wussy "Commander in Chief" Obama.

This activity is happening all to often and the WH better pay attention to this!
FRED
Surprised the Navy let any aircraft within a mile of a carrier. Antiship missiles have much longer ranges.

Four Hornets on your tail will DEFINITELY get your attention.

This is why they should have kept the f-14 and its standoff missiles, keeping the bad guys 200 miles away was a much better idea than scrambling when they are 1 mile away.
Jonathan
Where do they keep the nuclear wessels?
Wally
I don't understand why people are acting like these type of activities are new. We also do it to them...relax it is just the normal military cat and mouse play of the U.S. and Russia!
David
Holly Cow Batman!! They let them get within ONE MILE? What would have happened if these 2 pilots had been nut cases and decided to try and start a war and had attacked? I can't believe the Navy would let any plane get within a mile of a carrier.

This is nothing new. We did the same with the former Soviet Union. Our submarines followed their ships and subs undetected. We flew close to their ships, they flew close to ours.
The game continues.

In related news, the USS Transgender, the USS Black Lives Matter, and the USS Food Stamp were dispatched to the area.

Putin knows that Obama is not a strong leader and will not respond in kind so he is emboldened. Incidents like this will probably increase with Obama rolling over and playing dead. Our "president" has made the US the laughing stock of the world.

Watched two Bears buzz our Coast Guard cutter at a very low altitude while on Ocean Station Charlie back in 1972. Bombay doors were open so the Russian crew could photograph our surprised expressions. Quite the experience.

Yawn. It happens all the time.
Ive personally flown through Soviet exercises in the North Pacific.
We both do it.
John
what's up with the 1 mile distance. I know nothing about this kind of stuff, but letting them get within 1 mile of our carrier seems a little to close for comfort. Threat or no threat
Donald
Oh ya! Russia is conducting flights along the East Coast of the United States with Nuclear capable Aircraft Bombers. China is conducting their Nuclear weapon ship off the West Coast of America. SO WHAT?
Tim Floyd
This happened all the time back in the 70's. Everytime a carrier would enter or leave the Straits of Gibralter, they we come check us out. It was all a game. We would intercept a couple hundred miles out. They would check us out as we checked them out.
