One member of a U.S. special operations force was killed during an overnight mission to rescue hostages held by Islamic State militants in northern Iraq, the first American to die in ground combat with the militant group, U.S. officials said on Thursday.

The Delta Force soldier is the first American killed in ground combat with ISIS, and the first killed in action in Iraq since U.S. troops withdrew from the country in December 2011.

Thanks for not turning your back on the Kurds.

This isn't the first time I have wondered about Obama's policy of "No boots on the ground". Seems to be politically motivated. Not a good reason to have our service men die.

A
Prayers for the American killed.

Oobert
Meanwhile, back in the US, major portions of cities are held hostage by gangs of thugs.

i dont think there whole country is worth the loss of this one American Hero

Adam
I'm glad the Kurds survived. They are taking the fight to IS.... RIP, American.... You died for a very good cause.

Mike
Reuters and CNN cannot be trusted, they are part of the media that continues to promote a criminal like Mrs. Clinton who is not even qualified to be a dog-catcher.

Elias
We did what the Iraqi's couldn't. My prayers and condolences go to the servicemen and his family and friends.

bill
i thought they weren't sending ground troops

Why is it that every time democrat politicians get involved we lose?

Marco
It would be nice if we could be as eager to rescue Americans, when was the last time that happened. Not sure, but has Obama rescued any Americans in the last 6 1/2 years.

Mahmood Ali
I do not understand this! The hostages that rescued, according to this article, were all Kurd. The question here if they were all Kurd then why Americans had to go. What is our responsibility of rescuing other people? Why the Kurd do not go and rescue their own people? Why sacrifice Americans lives and spare their own lives?

Katrina
U.S. servicemen are giving their lives for Kurdish hostages, WHY?

Truth
Sorry, 70 Kurdish hostages are not worth one American life.

A Snarky Moderate
I don't think Russians rescue hostages alive which is probably why Iraq asked the US to do it.

WR
R.I.P. to the American serviceman killed. Tough men doing a dangerous job.

Junior
Another son lost in the service of despots.

We need to get the hell out of the Middle East. It is nothing but an 8,000 year kill zone for anybody who goes there. It will always be filled with nothing but ever-feuding religious factions of nutjobs. Everywhere in the Middle East. It is a death trap.

WeNeedRealMusic
I think all foreign intervention needs to cease and desist in the Mid-East. Let Daesh take over. The peoples will naturally come together after so much oppression and eventually kill off all these cowardly bastids. This region is in constant turmoil built upon religious hatred.

Tom
I hope theses Muslims remember this young man who gave his life for their freedom!

God bless you. I am proud we have men and women willing to stand up against these terrorist.

J L
Our US veterans are the greatest and many have given their all for the right of so many fools to display their stupid comments in all forms of media about things in government for which they know absolutely nothing factual for for which many of them were never willing to serve their country.

Sincere
U.S. funded terrorist kills U.S. servicemen LMFAO

Jake G
Unless there are United States hostages we shouldn't get involved. Sounds like we rescued at least 20 Iraq Security forces which probably surrendered because they were too scared to fight anyway. Who knows who the other folks were. Probably more of the same.
